With new regulations transforming Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL), brands must treat it as a fully integrated part of the customer journey — not a bolt-on growth hack.

BNPL providers like Klarna and Clearpay have boomed over the years. This has been a dream scenario for retail marketers thanks to greater conversions and less cart abandonment. But while BNPL supercharged the path from desire to purchase, it didn’t always earn consumer trust.

Now with the UK government introducing mandatory affordability checks, clearer disclosures and FCA oversight, brands must rethink the role of payments in the overall brand experience. This is an opportunity to embrace regulation as a foundation for more intentional, transparent, and insight-driven shopping experiences.

From Conversion-Obsessed to Clarity-First

Historically, most brands have used BNPL to reduce clicks and convert quickly. But new regulations have reset the goalposts; clarity must now take priority over convenience. It’s time for retailers to show they take the financial decisions of their customers seriously.

Transparency needs to replace urgency as the north star of payment design. That means no hidden terms, confusing timelines, or vague language. Just clear, digestible information that helps customers make informed decisions rather than impulsive ones. When people understand exactly what they’re committing to, they’re more likely to trust a brand and therefore make repeat purchases.

In a post-regulation landscape, these features will be markers of a responsible, consumer-led brand.

Rethinking the Role of BNPL

BNPL should no longer be treated as merely an add-on at the end of the customer journey. It needs to be a seamless experience that runs across the entire path to purchase.

Rather than waiting until the payment page to introduce payment options, brands should be transparent about BNPL (and any new regulations) throughout the shopping journey. That means clearly stating your commitment to responsible lending upfront.

This approach tells your customers that you care about their financial wellbeing. That message, delivered consistently across digital touchpoints, transforms BNPL from a transactional tool into a trusted and well-embedded part of the brand experience.

By the time a shopper reaches the checkout, they’re prepared — even reassured — because they’ve been guided step by step. The process feels transparent and supportive. This is the definition of intelligent experiences: anticipating the needs of customers and adapting the experience based on the context. When done right, it doesn’t just drive sales but also deepens customer confidence and loyalty.

A Launchpad for Enhanced Reputation

A thoughtful response to regulation isn’t just good practice; it’s a competitive advantage. This goes beyond clearly communicating lending standards, finance partners, and a commitment to responsible credit at every relevant opportunity.

This is the potential of the new BNPL landscape: to reframe financial services as part of a brand promise.

To turn BNPL compliance from a burden to a brand advantage, retailers must embed education and transparency early in the customer journey and at every touchpoint. That means designing payment flows with clarity, removing ambiguity around terms, and ensuring teams are trained to treat payments as a core part of the customer experience, not just an afterthought.

Ultimately, this is about creating experiences that align with brand purpose and customer care, not just profit. It’s time to shift from surface-level convenience to intelligent experiences: data-driven, AI-enhanced customer journeys that anticipate needs, simplify decisions, and build long-term trust and loyalty.
